Located near the Nicaraguan border, these islands are part of the Santa Rosa National Park and Guanacaste Conservation Area. Collectively they are considered the best diving spot in the northern Pacific region of Costa Rica due to their great variety of marine life and visibility. They are, however, quote challenging dive sites so best suited to intermediate divers. Only two hours away from Playas del Coco, these islands have a great variety of spots with different characteristics, which make a diving day in the zone an unforgettable experience. Among the best are great spots like El Gran Susto (the big scare), Bajo Negro (black rock), Hojaranes, and Los Arcos.
El Gran Susto is renowned for its resident family of around 20 bull sharks which can measure as much as 3½ meters. Whilst the adrenalin is pumping you may also see manta rays, mako sharks and black tuna. Whale sharks have also been seen in the vicinity. The depth of dive sites in the Bat Islands can range from as little as 10m to around 40m. The average visibility is from 25m to 28m. Due to the low level of high flowing rivers in the area the water is usually clear all year around.
