The Catalina Island chain is a series of rocky outcrops 2-8 miles off the Pacific Coast of north western Costa Rica. These islands are volcanic and sedimentary rising from a sandy bottom about 60 - 120 feet. There are a haven for marine life including white tip reef sharks, golden rays, nurse sharks and southern sting rays. You can also see large schools of colourful tropical fish here. Giant Pacific Manta rays can be viewed here between November and May. These are not just ordinary manta rays but Manta birostris. This species of manta ray can have a wingspan of up 7.3 meters and weigh up to nearly 1,363 kg. These enormous animals feed primarily on the microscopic plants and animals found in plankton which is plentiful at the Catalinas Islands.
