The Gulf of Papagoyo is located on the northwest Pacific coast of Costa Rica. There are some 41 dive sites here, all of which are accessible within a 30 minute boat ride. Abundant marine life is boosted by the occasional appearance of schools containing hundreds of Mobula Rays and thousands of Golden Cow-nosed Rays.
Nutrient rich currents flow through the Gulf, carrying with them plankton and krill. The numbers are large enough to support several different species of shark, ray, and moray eels. Large filter feeders such as manta rays, humpback whales and the occasional whale shark pass through varying times of year. Shoaling fish such as barracuda, grunts and jacks can number hundreds and even thousands. You can also see colourful tropical fish such as parrotfish, king angelfish and moorish idols which are year round coral reef residents. Exotics such as seahorses, frogfish and clown shrimps are welcome surprises on the reef. Diving the Gulf of Papagayo is a year around activity. However the wet or ‘green’ season can be some of the best of the year. The Gulf does not suffer much from run off from rivers, being few in number and size which helps to stabilise the visibility. Others marine species frequently observed in the Gulf include: - nurse sharks
