Seychelles Sample 8-Day Sailing Itinerary

This is a recommended itinerary only for a sail yacht charter holiday and can be adjusted according to what you most want to see and do, as well as taking into consideration sea and wind conditions prevailing at the time.

Day 1   Bay Ste Anne, Praslin to Curieuse - 7 miles
Following your briefing and your own preparations, take your first short sail in the Indian Ocean to the sheltered Baie Laraie on the east coast of Curieuse island.  Curieuse is surrounded by the Curieuse Marine National Park and on land it is home to about a hundred Seychelles giant tortoises.  You can take a 45 min or so walk on this island to explore its mangroves and "coco fesse" trees.  You can also visit the museum and enjoy one of its a pleasant beaches.

Day 2 (option 1)  Curieuse to Saint Pierre to Curieuse - 6 miles
Sail from Curieuse to St Pierre islet - a mass of rounded rocks crowned with a clump of tall palms swaying gently in the wind.  This is a very picturesque islet and an excellent spot for snorkelling with underwater scenery to reflect its beauty above water. Sail back to Baie Laraie for the night.

Day 2 (option 2)  Curieuse to Aride to Curieuse - 12 miles
Aride Island is an important bird habitat supervised by the Royal Society for Nature Conservation.  Landings here can be challenging by tender, so discuss this in detail at your pre-sail briefing.  Narrow paths on the island lead through the dense vegetation and a rocky barrier in the north from where the whole island can be observed.  Aride is free of cats and rats which have ravaged native bird and mammal life on so many tropical islands around the world.  Without them, Aride is a haven for a wide variety of seabirds, unique vegetation and rare land birds. The ten species of breeding seabird include the rare roseate tern and the red tailed tropicbird. The world's largest colony of lesser noddy, more than 200,000 couples nest here.  The island is open to visitors on Mondays, Wednesdays and Sundays.  Sail back to Baie Laraie for the night.

Day 3   Curieuse to Ile Sainte Anne - Mahe - 28 miles
Set sail across open sea to the Sainte Anne Marine Park in the north west of the main island of Mahe.  Anchor overnight at Anse Cimetière.

Day 4   Victoria to Port Launay - 13 miles
You can to sail into the harbour area of Victoria to visit the town and make use of the best provisioning opportunities in the Seychelles.  There are some colourful markets here as well as supermarkets.
Sail around the northern tip of Mahe and south into the huge Beau Vallon Bay with its long sandy beach.  There are several hotels along this stretch ranging from the very premium Northolme Hotel to the livelier section further south.  If conditions are favourable, there is some excellent snorkelling at Ile aux l’Ilot which often hosts large shoals of fish.
Continuing south to the Baie Ternay Marine National Park, the coastal scenery is magnificent becoming evermore dramatic.  Anchor at the quiet and sheltered bay of  Port Launay, surrounded by steep forested hills.

Day 5   Port Launay to La Digue - 35 miles
This is your longest sail.  It begins with the more of Mahe’s dramatic coastal scenery and ends at many people’s favourite island of La Digue.  The south east coast of La Digue provides excellent moorings in deep coves behind a fringing reef which encircles most of the island.  Petite Anse and Grande Anse are perfect anchorages with white sand beaches separated from each other by rocky spurs.

Day 6   La Digue
We recommend that you set aside most of the day to explore La Digue island.  This is a car free island, but it is small enough to move around on a rented bicycle, on foot or by riding on an ox cart taxi.  The central hill is worth a climb for commanding views over the inner islands you have and have yet to sail to.  There are also some splendid beaches and bays here to enjoy from on shore or from your yacht.
One of the natural history highlights of La Digue is the Black Paradise Flycatcher.  A conservation programme on the island has brought numbers up to around 278 which for an island the size of La Digue makes them reasonably easy to see – but this is La Digue and its tiny neighbours of Félicité and Marianne are the only places this bird is found.

Day 7   La Digue to Baie Sainte Anne
Sail around Marianne and Félicité.  We propose an anchorage on the west coast of Grande Soeur for lunch.  There is excellent snorkelling at Cocos Island whose large ochre coloured rocks have been beautifully carved by the action of the sea.
Sail to Baie Sainte Anne on Praslin overnight.
