Tailor Made
(extensions to Costa Rica & Panama programmes) Wilderness Canoeing, Rafting & Lodge Safaris in Costa Rica and Nicaragua
|
Following years of instability, Nicaragua is now finding its feet allowing us to rediscover some of its fantastic natural, cultural and wilderness assets. Two areas of particular interest are easily accessible from Costa Rica. The first of these is the 2,500 km2 Indio-Maíz Biosphere Reserve which connects directly to the Barro Colorado and Tortuguero reserves on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica.
Like the Tortuguero, the south eastern section of the Indio-Maíz Reserve is cut by a network of interconnecting channels and lagoons. These water trails enable easy exploration of this enormous wilderness area, either by motorised launch and better still by open kayaks.
There is just one lodge in the whole of this reserve which is the well designed Río Indio Adventure Lodge with whom Aqua-Firma enjoys a close relationship. Ralph Pannell, Director of Aqua-Firma, was honoured to visit the lodge at the same time as Nicaragua’s President Alberto Bolaños, his Minister for the Environment and Natural Resources, C. Arturo Harding Lacayo, and the Managing Director of Río Indio Lodge, Dr. Alfredo López.
The lodge was built with special consideration for the environment and with close cooperation with Nicaragua’s Ministry of Environment. There are two complete sewage treatment systems to ensure that waste water is properly treated before being returned to the natural environment. All of the lodge’s walkways are raised and the timber used was sourced either from plantations or selectively logged.
Our second main area of interest is a private reserve and luxury lodge called Morgan’s Rock on the Pacific Coast of southern Nicaragua. Half of the lodge‘s 2,000 ha. property is a dry forest reserve and most of the rest is an organic farm which supplies the lodge.
