One way of finding a place where two oceans meet is to journey to the challenging waters of the Cape of Good Hope or Cape Horn.  Another is to visit the Panama Canal where the Atlantic connects to the Pacific through the American Continent’s narrowest section.  To protect the Canal from filling with silt and bringing its traffic to a standstill, a band of protected rainforest exists along much of its banks, channels and islands.  Of these forests there are two areas that are special for wildlife:

  • The Canal’s largest protected forest area is the Sobrenia National Park.  This park is an excellent place from which to observe birds (283 species) and mammals, including one of the most concentrated populations of sloths we have ever found.
  • Barro Colorado Island - a world centre in rainforest research run by the Smithsonian Institute.

Call us to discuss your own tailor made holiday itinerary to explore Panama, Nicaragua and the best of Costa Rica including the Osa Peninsula, Tortuguero, the Brauillo Carillo National Reserve, the La Selva Research Station, Monteverde for the Resplendent Queztal, Arenal Volcano, La Amistad Biosphere Reserve, Manuel Antonio NP, the Rios Sarapiqui and Pacuare and more.

By purchasing an ‘open jaw’ international flight ticket, you can easily combine Panama with a visit to Costa Rica.  Open jaw tickets into Costa Rica and out of Panama cost about the same as return tickets to either destination.  The only extra cost is a single flight between the two which costs around £80.
