Our expert led Wildlife & Marine Life and photography voyage to Arctic Spitsbergen has consistently proven to be one of our best voyages for incredible wildlife observations. Travelling in the Arctic region in June evokes a real winter wonderland atmosphere with plenty of ice around and a scattering of mountain snow to compliment this stunning polar wilderness.
The above water voyage focuses on the spectacular fjords and islands of North Spitsbergen, which offer incredible numbers of birds in early summer. In 2010 we were lucky enough to enjoy close encounters with 13 polar bears and in 2011, some 15 were observed on our voyage. Other recent highlights have included Blue whales with calves as well as wonderful sightings of walruses, reindeer, arctic foxes, ringed and bearded seals. Our aim is to reach the Hinlopen Strait and the island of Nordaustlandet, the most northerly of the major Spitsbergen islands. Ringed by high mountains and shimmering glaciers, these northern bays and fjords offer outstanding Arctic landscapes that are likely to leave a deep and lasting impression. We are always on the lookout for whales, of which we might hope to see fin whales, minke whales and the ghostly white beluga. Less frequently, humpback whales, bowhead whales and sei whales have been seen on these voyages. Above & Below Water Photography Workshops Andy’s skills and techniques with both camera and video will provide the focus of several workshops which he will present as part of this special photographic departure. Participants will benefit above water with spectacular mountains, glaciers and polar nature and wildlife as his subject matter. Having divers onboard the voyage provides a unique opportunity to see and learn more about the complete polar ecosystem than on a purely land based expedition. With Andy as our Aqua-Firma photographic specialist, non-divers will be able to observe his underwater images from our daily diving exploration. A team of natural history experts and guides will deliver a comprehensive programme of inspiring evening lectures about the wildlife, ecology and conservation of the Arctic. Wildlife, Marine Life & the Arctic Wilderness You will be accompanied on this voyage by underwater film makers and divers who will bring with them great benefits, opening up the secrets of the Arctic depths. A series of successful voyages in the past incorporating divers have opened a new dimension to all passengers, providing a unique opportunity to see and learn more about nature than on a purely land based expedition. Each day you will have the opportunity to share experiences with those who have been exploring both above and below the ice. You will also have the chance to see photographs and video footage from the experts and other passengers. To enhance your understanding, there will be a programme of inspiring evening lectures about the wildlife, ecology and conservation of the Arctic. You can also refer to the onboard library of Arctic natural history guides and reference books. As the divers have their own dedicated guides and zodiacs, there will be a much smaller number of top side explorers who will be free to roam the land without the crowds. Twice each day our expedition leaders and guides will accompany small personalised groups in exploring, historical sites, research stations and visit remote locations simply breath taking in their natural beauty. Our ship is a modern and comfortable ice strengthened research vessels which has very recently been refurbished and upgraded to the highest standard. The entire vessel is open to all, including the decks at all levels particularly the ship’s bridge from which you can enjoy awe inspiring panoramic views. There are two gangways down to the water which doubles the speed at which we can enter and exit the water via our rigid inflatable boats. Sea Kayaking in Spitsbergen If you can draw yourself away from other activities, sea kayaking in Spitsbergen is quite exceptional. As long as you have at least some kayaking experience, you can find yourself in your own or a double kayak, paddling alongside sea ice on which a huge walrus is resting; alongside steep cliffs covered in thousands of Arctic sea birds; paddling alongside an inquisitive bearded seal; or sliding quiet and close to a herd of Spitsbergen reindeer.
"In the space of less than two hours I kayaked past three enormous glaciers, dramatic high peaked mountains, seals, birds ... and at the end of a trail of polar bear tracks watched as two polar bear cubs snuggled up to their mother on a headland and gazed out to sea". (Ralph Pannell on this voyage in June 2011) Diving notes For full details of the diving offered on this departure please see click here. This expedition does not involve cutting holes in the ice to dive. Dives are conducted from the expedition vessel's compliment of zodiacs, whilst others are from the shore. Dives are relatively shallow and we dive to approximately 30 to 60 feet. Please see our dedicated polar diving information for more details.
