As North Atlantic Herring enter Tysfjord between October and January each year, so to do the Orcas, or Killer Whales, that prey on them. This is one of the most assured opportunities to see Orcas and we can arrange tailor made visits of as little as 3 days, although 4 is our recommended minimum stay.
Whilst you stay in a hotel on land by day, we arrange day visits aboard a small passenger vessel, or aboard Rigid Inflatable Boats (RIBs). The advantage of the larger boat is that you can take advantage if its warm interior whenever you like, whilst the RIB can provide slightly closer encounters.
On a four day visit you have the option of using one type of boat on one day and the other next. From the RIB we can also arrange for you to be kitted up in a dry suit and snorkelling gear for the opportunity to observe orcas beneath the water as well as above. The waters of Tysfjord are often very clear and an encounter with a pod of Orcas is an experience not to be forgotten. All of these encounters are conducted responsibly according to guidelines set out by local researchers and WWF Norway. For your third night of a 4 day visit, we transfer you to a hotel close to Harstad. For those who ski we can arrange cross country ski rental and transport to a floodlit park and skiing area.
