Area Size: 2.19 Km² Introduction Frégate is a privately owned island resort, situated approximately 55 km from Mahé, making it the most isolated of the granitic Inner Island group. It is characterised by its romantic atmosphere and relaxed setting, making it the ideal choice for couples and honeymooners. Historically, Frégate was notorious for being a popular pirate haunt during the latter part of the 17th century. Legend has it that the island still harbours buried treasure, although its exact location remains a mystery. Shortly after World War II, the island was purchased by Harry Savy, a man full of money making ideas for which to implement on Frégate. Such ideas transpired into the growing of a variety of crops, including vegetables, fruit, coffee, vanilla, cinnamon and poultry to be sold on markets in Mahé. The island soon became home to a population of 100 people, all of whom were busily engaged in a number of Savy's lucrative schemes.
To this day, Frégate grows a wealth of organic fruit and vegetables, all of which are cultivated by a dedicated team of gardeners in the island's plantation and Hydroponics House. The island also harbours an indigenous nursery, which is managed specifically for ecological purposes on the island. In terms of things to see and do on Frégate, the Island Museum is well worth a visit. The museum harbours some interesting displays and exhibits, teaching visitors about the island's maritime heritage, conservation work and native wildlife. The accommodation offered on Frégate comprises a luxurious five-star eco-lodge - a favourite island getaway for Hollywood stars! All villas provide superb sea views and offer the maximum in comfort, relaxation and facilities. All guests that stay on the island are encouraged to get involved with one of Frégate's many conservation projects.
