This one day kayaking adventure provides you with an opportunity explore Adventfjorden - the fjord in which Longyearbyen is situated.  This trip is an excellent as a one day add on to one of our Summer Arctic Voyages, especially for someone in search of a bit of active Polar adventure.

No previous kayaking experience is needed, as full training and necessary guidance will be given on the day.  In addition, all necessary equipment, including dry suits and safety equipment will also be provided.

In sturdy double kayaks, this trip comprises paddling towards Hiorthhamn within the Adventfjorden.  This fjord is a 7 km long and 4 km wide bay on the southern edge of Isfjorden in Western Spitsbergen.  This fjord is surrounded by dramatic mountain landscapes, some of which reach up to 1,000 metres in height.

In the early part of the season, where temperatures can usually be expected to remain above freezing, this trip involves paddling between ice floes, which often provides good opportunities to see birdlife and bearded seals.

Upon reaching your destination you will take a well earned rest while you are served a warm lunch, overlooking the surrounding landscapes.  After lunch you will have the opportunity to stroll around the site of an old coal mine - an industry which has long since been abandoned in Svalbard.

After an adventurous day of kayaking, you will be transferred back to Longyearbyen.

Please Note: Kayaking can cause some aching to the arms and shoulders, so we recommend that only people in fit physical shape partake in the trip.
