At 13,000 sq.km, the Ruaha National Park is Tanzania's second largest protected wilderness area and one of the country's most remote. This area can be very dry, but three rivers and the Matopotopo Swamp attract large numbers of game animals and predators alike. These include Tanzania's densest population of elephants whose present population is estimated to be 15,000. Predators include lions, cheetahs, leopards, jackals, hunting dogs, striped hyenas and crocodiles. The Ruaha is also well known for its antelopes including the sable and roan species, and greater and lesser kudu. The list of wildlife is long and also includes Grant's gazelles, eland, Lichtenstein's hartebeest, Defessa waterbuck, aardwolf, porcupines and large herds of buffalo which accumulate near water. Ruaha can be accessed from Arusha or as an ideal extension to our Southern Wilderness Safari which incorporates Africa's largest game reserve, the Selous, Zanzibar and an ecolodge on Chumbe Island Coral Park.
