Wildlife and Birdlife of Borneo

This privately guided journey is designed for wildlife and birdlife enthusiasts who want to experience the full nature of Borneo's wilderness areas, adapted to your own special interests.

Borneo has a huge variety of ecosystems and an incredible diversity of mammals, plants, birds and insects. These wildlife and birdlife journeys cover a broad spectrum of these habitats, including some of the world's tallest lowland rainforests, swamp forest, mangroves and misty montane or cloud forest.

For most of this journey, you will have your own expert bird watching guide who will have the ability to seek out and identify mammals, orchids or whatever else your natural history focus will be. We can discuss your interests in detail in advance and tailor what your guide takes you in search of. These experiences can include gliding through the Kinabatangan River Delta by quiet electric powered boat; taking to canopy walkways in the Danum Valley and Poring cloud forests; or waiting in a hide for wildlife to visit the unique 'mud volcanoes' and mineral licks in the Tabin Reserve.

There are approximately 420 species of bird in Borneo, including endemics such as the Bulwers Pheasant and Mountain Barbet, through to the some of the most distinctive birds of Wallacia, such as the Wreathed Hornbill, Buffy Fish Owl and stunning red, gold and blue Stork Billed Kingfisher.

Our new and pioneering search for wild Orangutans in the Gomantong Cave area has resulted in some exciting sightings of these truly unique apes. Parts of the Kinabatangan River can also often provide some excellent wild Orangutan encounters.  The Tabin Wildlife Reserve, the largest protected area in Sabah, can provide good sightings of Bornean Pygmy Elephants and it is one of the last homes of the Sumatran Rhino. Whilst rhino are too endangered to hope to see, we have had recent sightings of the diminutive Leopard Cat - a rarely seen and secretive resident of Southern Asian forests.

If your interest extends to marine life, then Borneo is as much a hotspot for underwater diversity as it is above water. From colourful coral encrusted drop offs and fringing reefs, to fabulous macro-marine life, Borneo has some famous snorkelling and diving areas which include the islands of Sipadan, Lankayan, Layang Layang, Mataking and the wide Derawan Archipelago.

Turtle Island is an easy overnight option - so-called because it is one of the few places in the world where Green and Hawksbill turtles can be seen nesting and eggs hatching year round on its beaches year round.

Aqua-Firma has many years knowledge through living and working in this region and with this knowledge your journey can be tailored suit your wildlife interests. Please contact one of our Borneo experts to discuss journey possibilities in greater depth.
