Silfra Fissure, Glaciers & Volcanoes - Diving Experience

Diving in Iceland is a truly unique experience and is one that can be enjoyed all year round.  This five day Icelandic trip is a fantastic introduction to diving in Icelandic waters, offering dry suit scuba divers diverse and interesting diving opportunities.  Amidst the diving, there are also opportunities to relax and soak up the geothermal energy of the world famous Blue Lagoon and go in search of whales on a guided whale watching boat trip.  Based in a traditional Icelandic hotel on one of Reykjavik's oldest streets, you will be ideally located to partake in each day's activities.

Situated within the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Thingvellir National Park, the Silfra Fissure, remains between 2°C and - 4°C all year round and is among one of the most extraordinary dive sites in the world.  Firstly, it is situated above sea level within a narrow canyon in the lava field between the two continent al plates of North America and Europe, a continuation of the Mid Atlantic Ridge which bisects the Atlantic.  Divers will get the unique opportunity to dive between the two continents with one hand on each!  Divided into three sections - Silfra Hall, Silfra Cathedral and Silfra Lagoon, we endeavour to explore all three sites during the two dives in the Fissure.

Secondly, due to the combination of glacial melt water from the Langjökull glacier some 50km away and groundwater from the surrounding area, the visibility in the Silfra Fissure is excellent, generally around 100+ metres.  Furthermore, the water, which has taken around 20 years to reach the Fissure is as pure as you can get and perfectly safe to drink during the dives.

Another day of diving will have you immersed in geothermal energy as we take you to Lake Kleifarvatn, which harbours just recently discovered underwater hot springs.  Even before entering the lake, the geothermal energy will be apparent from the white and yellow sulphur deposits on the lake floor and the gas bubbles emanating from in between.  Divers will literally feel the energy as they descend, with air bubbles creating pressure and vibrations within the rocks, described by some divers as diving into an earthquake.

Above the surface once again, there will be the opportunity to visit some nearby hot springs, where you will be able to witness bubbling mud pots and steam rising from the ground.  There is also the chance to be dropped off at some geothermal pool in Reykjavik on the way back to bathe in the hot tubs and thus round off this day geothermally.

After two active days of diving, the last day in Iceland will follow a somewhat more leisurely, though very much still water-based itinerary.  Renowned for providing some of the best whale watching in the world, the morning will be spent surveying the Icelandic waters for such species as Minke and Humpback Whales and Orca as well as Dolphins and Porpoises.  Whale sightings of course are very much dependent on the sea conditions and the season.  There may also be opportunities to observe birdlife, including puffins and other seabirds. This boat based whale watching trip will be led by knowledgeable guides who will be able to provide assistance in identifying different whale species and advising where to look as well as answering any questions.

For your final afternoon, we will take you to the Blue Lagoon, where you will be able to bathe in the warm (37-39°C) geothermal saltwater, whilst soaking up the geothermal energy and scenic beauty in one of the world's best known medical spas.  Renowned for its unique capabilities of cleansing body, mind and soul, you will come away from the Blue Lagoon feeling refreshed, relaxed and revitalised.

NOTE: Whilst you can dive in the Silfra Fissure all year round, during the winter months (November - February) Lake Kleifarvatn can often freeze over, therefore the Geothermal Dive may be unavailable. Other diving day trip options are available. Please visit our Iceland Diving webpage for further details.

If you have the time and the inclination to stay longer, however, to explore more of Iceland's dramatic landscapes or partake in some more adventures activities such as additional diving, rafting, glacier hiking or biking, please Contact Us to discuss the options.  During the winter we can also combine a trip similar to this with opportunities to observe the Northern Lights.

The intention is that you will get to experience all three of Silfra's main dive sites, which include Silfra Hall, Silfra Cathedral and Silfra Lagoon.

Created by the underground wells, the slight current will ensure that your dive into the crack is an easy one.
